Home Remedies for Heel Cracks

Last updated on February 12th, 2023 at 05:09 pm

Our feet are often one of the most neglected parts of our bodies, yet they play a crucial role in our daily lives by carrying us from one place to another. Heel cracks, also known as heel fissures, are a common problem many have to deal with. These cracks can be caused by various factors such as dry skin, ageing, lack of moisture, poor foot hygiene, and even medical conditions. This article will explore effective home remedies for heel cracks. Read on!

Causes of heel cracks

Various factors can cause heel cracks. Dry skin is one of the most common causes. When the skin on our feet is not adequately hydrated, it can become dry and brittle, making it more prone to cracking. Ageing can also cause the skin on our feet to become thinner and less elastic, leading to cracks and fissures. Our body produces natural moisturizing factors (NMF). As we get older, the NMF diminishes, making the skin dry, taut and easier to crack. Lack of moisture, particularly in dry climates, can also contribute to the development of painful heel cracks.

Poor foot hygiene can also play a role in the development of heel cracks. Wearing shoes that don’t fit properly, not washing and moisturising your feet regularly, and exposing your feet to harsh soaps and chemicals can all lead to dry, cracked skin. Additionally, some medical conditions such as psoriasis, eczema, and fungal infections can cause the skin on our feet to become dry and prone to cracking. Identifying the underlying cause of your heel cracks is crucial to treat them effectively.

Home remedies for heel cracks

Emollients

Several home remedies can help to heal and prevent heel cracks. One of the most important steps is to moisturise your feet regularly. It will help to keep the skin on your feet hydrated and prevent it from becoming dry and brittle. You can use a variety of moisturisers, such as petroleum jelly, coconut oil, or some other forms of thick cream, to keep your feet hydrated. The most effective combination in my experience as a clinician is Vaseline Petroleum Jelly and urea-based creams. Urea is a natural compound produced by the body, and researchers have found that it can aid in removing hard skin. This is important since cracked heels are often associated with calluses or hard skin.

To use the emollient, wash the feet gently and carefully. Dry them thoroughly. First, apply the Vaseline Petroleum Jelly directly into the cracks. This has a soothing and healing effect on heel cracks. Secondly, use the urea-based cream over the area. Feedback from the patients I have recommended this combination to is very positive. To further imcrease clinical outcome, you can do this just before bed and apply a damp sock followed by a dry one to keep the moisture in the skin and to prevent the Vaseline and cream from soiling the bed.

Soak

Another effective home remedy for heel cracks is to soak your feet in warm water. This can help to soften the skin and make it easier to remove the hard skin, making moisturising more effective. Adding Epsom salt, baking soda, or essential oils to the water is believed to enhance healing. Tea tree oil, for example, has antifungal and antiseptic properties that can help to prevent infections and promote healing.

Using baking soda

I have not seen any evidence in the literature for Baking soda as a treatment. However, many use it and think it is a helpful home remedy for heel cracks. Mix baking soda with water to form a paste. Then, apply it to your heels to help exfoliate and soften the skin, reducing the appearance of cracks. Coconut oil is used in places like India and the Caribbean. It is believed to be another effective moisturiser that can be used on the feet to prevent and heal heel cracks.

Aloe vera and honey

This home remedy has been widely used in countries like India for a long time. Although the scientific evidence for its use is not forthcoming, it is worth trying as it is unlikely to do serious harm. Furthermore, the scientific literature suggests that honey is antibacterial. Therefore, it may help fight and prevent infection. Aloe vera is used in many modern products and can at least hydrate the skin.

Footwear

Wearing comfortable shoes that fit correctly is essential for preventing and healing heel cracks. Shoes that are too tight or loose can put unnecessary pressure on the feet and cause hard skin and cracks. Also, avoid open-back shoes as they are known to cause and exacerbate heel cracks.

By wearing shoes that fit well and provide adequate support, you can help to keep your feet healthy and prevent heel cracks from developing.

Tips to Prevent Heel Cracks

Preventing heel cracks is just as important as healing them. Here are some tips to keep your feet healthy and crack-free:

  1. Keep your feet clean and dry: Washing your feet regularly and drying them thoroughly can help to prevent the growth of bacteria and fungi that can cause infections and dry skin, especially if you suffer from medical conditions like diabetes.
  2. Avoid harsh soaps and chemicals: Harsh soaps and chemicals can strip the skin of its natural oils, making it dry and prone to cracking. Instead, use mild soap and moisturiser to keep your feet hydrated.
  3. Exfoliate your feet regularly: Exfoliating your feet can help to remove dead skin cells and promote the growth of healthy new skin. It will keep your feet soft and smooth, reducing the risk of cracks.
  4. Apply moisturiser daily: Moisturising your feet daily will help keep the skin hydrated and prevent it from becoming dry and brittle. Use a suitable moisturiser for your skin type that contains natural ingredients.
  5. Wear socks made from natural fibres: Socks made from natural fibres, such as cotton or wool, can help to keep your feet protected. Synthetic fibres can cause irritation and dry skin, increasing the risk of cracks.
  6. Wear shoes that fit correctly: Too tight or loose shoes can put unnecessary pressure on the feet and cause calluses and crack. Wear shoes that fit well and provide adequate support to keep your feet healthy and prevent heel cracks.

These simple tips can help prevent heel cracks and maintain healthy, beautiful feet. Remember to be gentle with your feet and take good care of them; they will last a long time.
